LeBron says Ibaka is 'stupid'

LeBron James fired back at Serge Ibaka, calling him "stupid" after the Oklahoma City forward said people were giving James too much credit in the NBA finals for his defensive play.
"I don't really care what he says, he's stupid," James said at Tuesday morning's practice. "Everyone says something to me every series, then (the media) tries to get a quote. It's stupid."
Ibaka, who is considered one of the top defensive players on the Thunder, told the Palm Beach Post, "LeBron is not a good defender. He can play defence for two to three minutes but not 48. LeBron can't play (Kevin Durant) one-on-one."
James and Ibaka were both on the NBA's All-Defensive Team this season.
Three-time league MVP James has drawn high praise in the 2012 postseason for the way he has shut down the other teams' top scorers like Durant and forced them to take fouls.
Miami heads into Tuesday night's game four with a 2-1 series lead. Part of the reason is three-time scoring leader Durant has gotten into foul trouble the last two games and has been sitting for long stretches on the bench when the Thunder need him on the floor.
Congo's Ibaka, who is in his third season, has a league leading 56 blocks in 18 playoff games this season.

‘I tried hard but I couldn’t beat the guy.’” Bradley said to Arum before the controversial decision

AS VEGAS—Manny Pacquiao didn’t lose his crown in the ring. It was stolen from him by the judges and handed over to Timothy Bradley Jr.
The big crowd and the journalists at ringside had Pacquiao the clear winner, but in a bizarre twist, two of the three judges saw otherwise and made Bradley the new World Boxing Organization welterweight champion by a split decision.
Judge Jerry Roth had Pacquiao ahead, 115-113, on the first scorecard, but judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford overturned the result by similar 113-115 scores that earned boos and shouts of insults from the 14,206 fans at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Major networks and websites like Yahoo, CNN, BBC, USA Today and HBO had Pacquiao, who suffered his first loss in 16 fights dating back to 2005, as the winner.
The Associated Press scored it for Pacquiao, 117-111. Writing about the fight, veteran AP boxing writer Tim Dahlberg said that while Bradley had promised to deliver a shock in the fight, “the biggest shock came from the judges’ scorecards.”
Arum, who handles both fighters, did not take the decision sitting down. He had it 10 rounds for Pacquiao. The Filipino’s chief trainer Freddie Roach also scored it 10-2 for his fighter.
An 80-year-old boxing Hall of Famer, Arum called the judges the “three blind mice,” noting that even Roth’s score did not reflect the real outcome of the fight.
“Can you believe that? Unbelievable,” Arum said. “I went over to Bradley before the decision [was announced] and he said, ‘I tried hard but I couldn’t beat the guy.’”
“Unfathomable” and “incomprehensible” were just some of the words Arum used to describe the obvious ring ripoff in this gambling city.
November 10 rematch
Arum said there would be a rematch on November 10 at the same venue.
The Sarangani congressman gave three rounds to his opponent. The Philippine Daily Inquirer saw it the same way for the eight-division world champion and Fighter of the Decade.
OUTPUNCHED VICTOR Filipino boxing idol Manny Pacquiao outpunches American Timothy Bradley Jr. (left) but still loses his WBO welterweight title at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, in a highly controversial and unpopular split decision. AFP
Though stunned by the outcome of the bout he dominated three-fourths of the way, Pacquiao remained composed. He said he was sure he won convincingly.
After the fight, Pacquiao climbed and stood on the ropes of a ring corner and acknowledged the throng who commiserated with him.
Knockout next time
The Filipino hero’s record dropped to 54-4-2 with 38 knockouts. Bradley stretched his unbeaten run to 29 wins.
Looking ahead to a second fight, Pacquiao said he would be a warrior gunning for a knockout the next time and leave no room for officials to interfere with the outcome.
From the opening bell, Pacquiao showed he was the faster, stronger fighter.
He staggered Bradley several times but was unable to dispose of the durable 28-year-old who thrived on a vegetarian diet in the course of his three-month training.
In a wheelchair
Bradley acknowledged Pacquiao’s speed and power during the postfight conference, where he appeared in a wheelchair, but said he fought well and the judges awarded him a fair decision.
Incredibly, Bradley claimed he twisted his ankle as early as the second round and then also hurt the other after stepping on Pacquiao’s foot.
Bradley said he told his chief trainer, Joel Diaz, about his predicament, but decided to endure the pain and fight to the end.
According to Diaz, Bradley will be brought to hospital for X-ray and other tests for his swollen feet.
Choice of referees
Arum also lashed out at the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the choice of referees and its failure to send a representative to answer the queries of reporters.
Though Pacquiao and Roach smirked at Team Bradley’s antics during a press conference in Los Angeles, when the latter brought giant replicas of a fight ticket—announcing the rematch—and even fake press credentials, the stunt, which according to Bradley was his idea, turned out to be prophetic—at least to the judges.
The new champion appeared like a loser in the postfight conference, however. Security personnel pushed his wheelchair on the way in and out of the conference.
Best moment
Pacquiao appeared to slow down in the ninth round as Bradley gained ground with jabs. The American then had his best moment early in the next round when he tagged Pacquiao with body shots.
With Pacquiao well ahead up to the eighth round, fight pundits said it would have been impossible for Bradley to snatch victory without knocking out Pacquiao. He never came close to it.
Realizing that his victory was highly suspect, Bradley said he would fight Pacquiao again and try to get a more convincing result.
Roach said Pacquiao should not have relaxed a bit in the decisive 11th round.
Punch statistics
The final punch statistics reflected Pacquiao’s superiority as he landed more punches—253 to Bradley’s 159—and connected with the more telling power punches, 190-108.
For the first time in a long while, however, Pacquiao was outmatched in punches thrown. He threw just 751 to Bradley’s 839.
Pacquiao’s shock defeat spoiled the pride and joy felt by Filipinos inside the arena after Jessica Sanchez, the Filipino-Mexican American Idol runner-up, rendered a powerful but soulful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, drawing thunderous applause.
Another US-based Filipino, 14-year-old Kirby Asunto, sang the Philippine national anthem.
‘Am ashamed’
It was Pacquiao’s first defeat since he lost to Erik Morales in Las Vegas in March 2005, ending a run of 15 consecutive wins by the Filipino, who had won world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions.
“I’ve never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight,” Arum said. “This is a fight that respected people scored 11-1, 10-2 for Pacquiao. They said that Bradley was trying hard but that this was a mismatch.”
“I did my best,” Pacquiao, 33, said at ringside. “I accept what the result is. I respect the judges, I cannot blame them. It is a part of the game. I give thanks to the Lord. I did my best but my best wasn’t good enough.”
Asked if he thought he had won the fight, Pacquiao replied: “Absolutely yes,” and the crowd—who included former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson—erupted with cheers.
Changing tactics
“Desert Storm” Bradley entered the fight a 4-1 underdog.
Pacquiao tried to turn the fight into a brawl, using his power to hurt Bradley in the early rounds. But Bradley changed tactics in the middle rounds and used his boxing skills to win apparently enough rounds—in the judges’ eyes—to take the narrow decision.
“I thought I won the fight,” Bradley said. “I didn’t think he was as good as everyone says he was. I didn’t feel his power.”
But the official statistics showed how much more punishing Pacquiao’s blows had been. The CompuBox statistics showed Pacquiao landing more punches in 10 of the 12 rounds.
Bradley seemed hurt in the fourth and fifth rounds, but Pacquiao had trouble landing big punches after that. Still, he seemed in control of the fight everywhere but on the judge’s scorecards.
‘He never hurt me’
Bradley said he hurt his ankle in the second round and that his trainer Diaz said he could either quit or try to take the fight to Pacquiao.
“I got my second wind in the sixth round,” Bradley said. “I worked the angles, sticking and moving.”
Pacquiao said he studied Bradley on tape before the fight and wasn’t surprised by anything he did. He said he thought he was in control of the fight and was shocked when the decision went against him.
“He never hurt me with his punches, most of them landed on my arms,” he said.
‘He’s a beast’
He tried to brawl with Bradley and seemed to hurt him in both the fourth and fifth rounds. But Bradley started moving and counter punching, though he never seemed to land any shots that hurt Pacquiao.
Pacquiao had vowed to look impressive against Bradley after struggling in his last outing with Juan Manuel Marquez, a fight many thought he lost. And he did early, landing good long left hands while beating Bradley to the punch on most exchanges.
“He hurt me a couple of times with his left,” Bradley said. “He’s a beast.”
Roach told Pacquiao after the 10th round that he had control of the fight, and urged him to fight hard the final two rounds.
“You have six minutes to go, son,” Roach said. “It’s your fight.”
But it wasn’t Pacquiao’s fight, with Bradley getting credit for winning some of the close middle and later rounds. After the 11th round Bradley went back to his corner and Diaz told him he needed to win the final round.
“I listened to my corner,” Bradley said. “I got to give him a rematch now.”
Return fight
Of the return fight, Arum said: “I’ll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this was outrageous.”
It was the biggest fight of Bradley’s career and it came with a minimum $5 million payday. The rematch will be even richer, though Pacquiao’s loss could damage any plans for a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather did not see the fight because he is serving a sentence on a domestic abuse charge at a jail a few miles from the MGM Grand. With reports from AP, AFP and Reuters

VIDEO: Pacquiao-Bradley Final Press Conference

Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley are seen staging their final press conference at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas ahead of their June 9 super fight set for HBO PPV.

Boston Celtics and Miami Heat Tie Up Series 3-3

Before tonight's game six of the NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, Massachusetts was awash with Celtic Pride. From front page newspapers like the Boston Herald, to talk radio and local news coverage, residents of the Commonwealth were already celebrating as if the Celtics had already amassed the series. Even Boston's Mayor Menino, who is nicknamed "Mumbles," got so caught up in the hysteria that he flubbed the names of Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett. But after tonight's game, it looks like Celtics devotees will have to wait until game 7 to claim victory. The Boston Celtics lost in game six to the Miami Heat, final score 98 - 79. A complete blow out by the Heat. The funny thing about Celtics fans, and New England sports fans in general, is their tremendous amount of enthusiasm. Boston sports fans are undeniably loyal, comically vocal, and their spirit can never be conquered. The loss to the Miami Heat tonight doesn't even effect them.

As a bandwagon Boston sports fans, I've come to a conclusion as to why Bostonians, and New England at large, are undeterred by a loss to LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Sure, tonight's failure is a letdown, but it's almost as if we don't even recognize the loss. It doesn't affect our enthusiasm for the team. We just ignore the outcome and move towards the next game with the same vigor and confidence that we had prior to the loss. The reason we are so readily able to look beyond a defeat is because Boston sports have suffered so many improbable and dramatic losses in the past, that we don't even feel disappointment anymore. Whether it be the "Curse of the Bambino" or the Giants last minute Superbowl win over the New England Patriots, we are undisturbed by these disappointments. It has become a part of our expectations for our sports teams. Whether it be the Boston Celtics or the Boston Red Sox, any time our favorite teams make it to the finals, we cheer and roar with unbridled support. If they fail, we just move on to the next season. We don't mourn the loss and we don't feel disappointment. Not anymore. It's so engrained into our history that it rolls off our backs like water beads on an oil slick.

Some people may think that this instilled and almost natural view is negative and counterproductive. After all, don't New Age guru's claim that positive thoughts breed positive results? In truth, I think it's great that as Boston sports fans, we can handle disheartenment so easily. While other fans may get stressed out or lose complete faith in their team, we never lose faith that at some point, we will win again. It may not be this year, it may be in 80 years, but we know at some point it will come to pass. And until that day, we don't live with hope and disappointment. We live with assurance, confidence and pride. Those are the genuine qualities of a Boston sports fan.

Celtics hope to repeat history against LeBron

LeBron James appreciates the irony. Matching up against the Boston Celtics, on the road, with the season on the line. He faced it in 2008 and lost. He faced it in 2010 and lost, removing his Cleveland Cavaliers jersey for the final time as he left the floor that night.

And now in a championship-or-bust season for the Miami Heat, James heads back to Boston for another win-or-else game. "It is fitting," James said.

The Celtics lead the Heat 3-2 in the Eastern Conference finals, and on Thursday night (Friday morning, PHL time) will look to clinch a third trip in five years to the NBA finals. If they succeed in Game 6 -- or Game 7, if it comes to that -- all three of those most recent Boston trips to the title round would come at James' expense.

His first five games at Boston resulted in three wins. His 19 games there since have also resulted in three wins.

No team, maybe no other building, has befuddled James as much as the Celtics and the arena they call home. He's had a 45-point effort there in a loss, a 42-point effort there in a loss, a 27-point, 19-rebound, 10-assist effort there in a loss. Another loss on Thursday, and his ninth season will end as the previous eight did -- without a championship.

"I know how much pain this team has given me over the years," James said. "So I guess it's only right that we would be going up there in an elimination game. In order for us to keep our season going, we've got to win in their building. So that's what it's about."

It's no secret that the expectation -- both internally and externally -- for the Heat is to win championships. That's what James famously vowed to get when he came to Miami in July 2010, and after losing in last season's finals to Dallas, it's been the only goal for the Heat in what the team has steadfastly referred to as a no-excuse season.

James won his third MVP award this season. He's averaging 29.9 points in the playoffs, six points better than his pace from a year ago and one-tenth of a point away from Kobe Bryant for the league's postseason lead in that department. And if Miami loses on Thursday night, the Heat season - and James' - will go down in most circles as a failure.

"We have to do this together," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "He's going to do what he's supposed to do, and we're going to do what we're supposed to do. We're going to do it together. We live and die together. You can't just single him out. People have to stop doing that. It's a team sport. If he performs, he's going to perform, and he's going to do his job."

Even with the Heat down in the series after a 94-90 home loss the previous night, Wednesday's practice in Miami did not have a funereal mood.

James was chatting and laughing as he shot free throws with some teammates toward the end of the workout, not far from where Heat President Pat Riley sat at his customary table to watch the proceedings. Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem teased each other about how much the other read, or didn't read, while enrolled at Florida. Mario Chalmers and assistant coach David Fizdale were talking about nuances of Boston guard Ray Allen's game.

"I think we're all disciplined enough to compartmentalize and focus on the challenge that we have ahead of us," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It never is easy on your journey to try to be an NBA champion. You'll always have these tough moments where you have to come together and go through that moment together. You can't skip it. There isn't an easy way."

There usually isn't an easy way against Boston, which is why this core of James, Bosh and Dwyane Wade came together in the first place. James wanted to increase his odds of winning a championship. Bosh wanted to get in the mix for one. When the Heat lost a first-round series to Boston in 2010, Wade vowed that Miami would get back to title-contending or he would go elsewhere.

"We got together, we want to compete for a championship, we want to win a championship every year," Wade said. "To us, it's not about outside expectations. It's our own expectations. You think if we lose, you guys are hurt by it? No. We are hurt by it.

"This is what we love to do," Wade added. "This is what our families love us to do. It's what we work all year for. We put a lot into it, obviously, as well as the other teams in the NBA. This is our job. So we're going to try to go out there and do our job and try to get a win."

That burden will largely fall on James, of course.

"No one said it was going to be easy," James said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge, me personally. I'm looking forward to it more than probably anyone on the team. So I'm going to lead these guys in the right direction, and hopefully it results in us winning."

Otherwise, it'll be another long summer.

"I put a lot of pressure on myself to try to come through for our team," James said. "(Tuesday) night I felt like I could have made a couple more plays, and I didn't. But at the end of the day, if you play hard, you go out there and lay it on the line, the numbers will take care of itself. And you can be happy with it."

Thunder advance to the NBA Finals

Call it a passing of the torch.

The young and hungry Oklahoma City Thunder rallied from a 63-48 halftime deficit to shock the veteran San Antonio Spurs, 107-99 on the Thunder's home-court, putting them through to the NBA Finals, Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time).

The Thunder trailed the series 0-2, with the Spurs riding a 20-game win streak, but their resolve never wavered, pulling off a four game sweep to ride into the Finals with home-court advantage in tow.

Oklahoma City opened the third quarter on a 12-5 run that got them to within five points, 67-62, on a Kevin Durant triple, 7:11 left in the period. Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili pushed their advantage back to nine, 71-62, but the Thunder countered with a 17-6 blast, with Durant draining yet another triple, to take the lead, 79-77.

Charities by Stephen Jackson and a score by Tony Parker allowed the Spurs to take a slim 81-80 lead entering the fourth, which they extended to 83-80 after Ginobili drew first blood in the final period. But the tight OKC defense held the Spurs without another field goal until the 5:26 mark of the quarter, getting a Tim Duncan hook shot to San Antonio to within two, 91-89.

Back-to-back triples by Derek Fisher and James Harden dug San Antonio a six-point hole, 99-93, 3:13 left to play, but the Spurs gamely pressed on, chipping it to two-points multiple times.

With under a minute left though, a dunk by Kendrik Perkins restored the advantage to six, and James Harden nailed clinching free throws shortly after, to seal the Thunder win.

Kevin Durant, who played the entire game, tallied a game-best 34 points, along with 14 rebounds, five assists, a steal and two blocks.

Teammate Russell Westbrook added 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while James Harden chimed in 16 markers, five boards and four dimes more.

Tony Parker finished with 29 for the Spurs, but his spectacular play in the first half seemingly vanished down the stretch. Tim Duncan posted a 25-11 performance, while Stephen Jackson came off the bench to provide 23 points, missing just one of his seven triple attempts.

The Thunder now await the winner of the Boston Celtics - Miami Heat series over in the Eastern Conference Finals. -

NBA: Thunder roll over Spurs, on the brink of making the NBA Finals

The Oklahoma City Thunder moved one win away from the NBA championship finals after a 108-103 road victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time) gave them a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Kevin Durant top-scored for the Thunder with 27 points while Russell Westbrook provided a further 23 and James Harden 20 as Oklahoma City resigned the Spurs to a third consecutive defeat for the first time this season.

San Antonio won the opening two games of the series, part of a 20-game winning streak, but are now staring down the barrel at extinction having lost at home for the first time since April 11 (April 12, PHL time).

The Thunder led at each break and by as many as 14 during the second quarter before the Spurs clawed back.

Seemingly beaten when down by 13 late in the fourth, San Antonio plundered 11 unanswered points to draw within two only to see Westbrook snap the streak with a clutch basket.

Harden then sucked the life out the Spurs with a great three pointer with just 28 seconds left.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich tried to spark his offense by starting regular sixth-man Manu Ginobili for Danny Green, but despite a game high 34 points it wasn't enough.

The series continues in Oklahoma City with Game Six on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). - Reuters

Azkals coach confident in team’s chances against Indonesia

Philippine national men’s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss vows to put up a fight against powerhouse Indonesia in their friendly Tuesday at the Rizal Football Stadium.

After missing their match against Malaysia last Friday that ended in a scoreless draw, brothers Phil and James Younghusband and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge will be back to bolster the Azkals.

“We have a very good squad, we are not short of options,” said Weiss, who remains confident despite the sudden departure of midfielder Stephan Schrock. The Fil-German Schrock had to fly back to Germany to attend an urgent family emergency.

Aside from Etheridge and the Younghusbands, the Azkals will also be spearheaded by national team mainstays Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta, Angel and Juani Guirado, Rob Gier, Jason de Jong, Manny Ott, Denis Wolf and Jason Sabio.

Weiss added that Tuesday’s match will be crucial to gauge how much improvement the Azkals have gone since their surprising run in the 2010 Suzuki Cup, where they succumbed to a 2-0 aggregate loss against Indonesia.

“We shall see where both teams stand six months ahead of the Suzuki Cup,” said Weiss.

Indonesia coach Nil Maizar is also aware of the caliber of the Azkals.

“The Philippines is a good team,” Maizar said. “We will fight for the best.”

Indonesia, ranked 151st in the FIFA world rankings, will be led by Indonesian-Dutch team captain Irfan Bachdim, who led his team to a fourth-place finish in an eight-team tournament in Palestine recently. Only four players from their runner-up squad in the 2010 Suzuki Cup will be battling the Philippines in the friendly.

Floyd Mayweather goes to jail

LAS VEGAS – Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. was booked into a Las Vegas jail on Friday to serve a 90-day sentence for domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend, a term that was previously postponed so the welterweight fighter could compete in a bout.
Mayweather, a flamboyant athlete regarded as the best defensive boxer of his generation, was issued standard dark blue prison garb and slippers and will be kept apart from the jail’s general population of more than 3,000 other inmates, Las Vegas police said.

The unbeaten Mayweather had the start of his jail term delayed in January so he could fight in a May 5 super welterweight bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, where he came through 12 bruising rounds to prevail over Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto.

After that contest, improving his professional record to 43-0, Mayweather discussed a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, his rival for the mythical title of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter.

Fans have been clamoring for a Mayweather-Pacquiao matchup despite such stumbling blocks as Mayweather’s insistence that Pacquiao agree to blood testing and disagreement over how the revenue from the fight should be divided.

Mayweather’s jail sentence stems from a guilty plea in December to a charge of felony battery and pleas of no contest to two counts of harassment linked to a 2010 attack on his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, and verbal threats against two of his children with her.

Mayweather was sentenced to six months for that outburst, but half the jail term was suspended.

The decision to delay his serving of the sentence, which was opposed by prosecutors, had been expected to benefit hotels and other businesses in Las Vegas. A major prize fight can generate $10 million to $15 million in non-gambling revenue.

During his time in the Clark County Detention Center, Mayweather will be confined to a cell consisting of a bed, toilet, sink and small desk, with a window to allow direct sunlight into the room, police said in a statement.

He will be allowed two books or magazines in his cell, and up to five religious books, and will be fed three meals a day, starting with breakfast at 4 a.m.

As a protective custody inmate, Mayweather will be kept in his cell while other inmates are on free-time, and will come out for free time for an hour a day while other inmates are on lockdown. During that time, he will have access to a recreation room, police said.

You wouldn't think that a Manny Pacquiao fight would need any help building buzz. Nor would you think that a Pacquiao fight against an undefeated, highly talented top titleholder in Timothy Bradley would be in such need.

Yet here we are, less than three weeks out from that bout, and only now is the conversation beginning to turn to Pacquiao-Bradley.

That's because the talk for the past few weeks first has been Floyd Mayweather's fight with Miguel Cotto, which has now come and gone; then turned to Lamont Peterson's positive test for synthetic testosterone and the cancellation of his rematch with Amir Khan; and now Andre Berto's positive test for nandrolone and the potential consequences on his June rematch with Victor Ortiz.

You'll forgive the presently pressing news for taking precedent over the consequently coming.

Gasol would like to play for the Bulls

Bulls.com columnist Sam Smith writes that versatile big man Pau Gasol might be exchanging Hollywood for the Windy City, citing Los Angeles Lakers insiders who tell him that "Gasol would like to play for the Bulls."

The 32-year-old Spaniard averaged a career-low 17.4 points, to go with 10.4 rebounds this past season with some questionable playoffs performances, including back-to-back single digit games against the Denver Nuggets in the first round, and some fourth quarter disappearing acts in the Western Conference semifinals versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In the same column, Smith also wrote, "You hardly need any sources for is to see [sic] how he and Bryant basically can't stand one another....That was because Bryant and Gasol were constantly at odds. And that came out several times in the playoffs with the two frequently arguing on the court and Bryant again questioning Gasol's heart."

Gasol currently is on the books for two more seasons at more than $19 million dollars per year.
