Four soldiers wounded in series of encounters with rebels in Agusan Sur

CAMP PANACAN, Davao City, May 7 (PNA) -- Four soldiers were wounded following a series of encounters with communist rebels in Barangay Salvacion, Trento, Agusan del Sur near the boundary of Compostela Valley.

Major Jacob Thaddeus Obligado, commanding officer of the 10th Civil-Military Operations Battalion, said members of the 25th Infantry Battalion engaged the rebels initially at 9 a.m. Monday after they responded to the information from the residents about the presence of the rebels in the area.
He said the initial encounter lasted for one hour and 30 minutes resulting in the wounding of four soldiers.

Obligado declined to name the soldiers as medical evacuation was going on.

He said the rebels fled during the initial encounter that led soldiers to recover three improvised landmines and a hand grenade.

The wounded were airlifted for immediate medical treatment, Obligado said.

Obligado said at 12:30 p.m. another encounter happened as pursuing troops tracked the rebels still in the vicinity of the barangay.

Obligado said blood stains were seen in the holding ground of the rebels, indicating that they also sustained several wounded comrades.

He vehemently denied that the soldiers sustained a large number of fatalities.

“We honor our soldiers especially those who offered the supreme sacrifice. We have no reason to hide their fate if ever soldiers incur fatalities in the battlefield,” Obligado said. (PNA)
